Visiting Edie’s Dad

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

Natalie, Edie and I flew down to Monroe, LA a few weeks ago for a long weekend to check in on Edie’s dad. He’s hanging in there and we made the most of our visit, driving all over Monroe and West Monroe, swimming in the indoor pool of the Holiday Inn Holodome (which is in fact not a dome), eating bad late-nite drive-in food, photographing backyard wildlife and roadside attractions, and meeting Mary and her family. Just wanted to share the photos from the trip.

Land of the Roadside Flashing Arrow Signs

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

I can’t say why exactly, but I’m fascinated by those signs they have out front of every liquor store, gun shop, fast food restaurant, bar, church, hair salon, car dealer etc. in The South (this is a sweeping and probably inaccurate generalization, as I’ve not really seen much of The South besides North-Eash Louisiana, but anyway…). I get this overwhealing urge to go back in time and grow up in one of these towns, so I can sneak out of the house with my 7th grade buddies in the middle of the night, find some of these signs and rearrange the letters and spell out entirely inappropriate things.

As we drove back and forth through Monroe, Louisiana, while visiting Edie’s father a few weeks ago, I sat in the passenger seat, my head doing word jumble overload as we passed flashing arrow sign after flashing arrow sign. As it happened, I had my camera, and from the passenger seat of the speeding car I had the opportunity to capture an assortment of the signs that Monroe’s roadsides have to offer.
